CIEMAT leads the Spanish programme for the Fusion Nuclear Science and Technology from the National Fusion Laboratory (LNF) department.
The main goals of the Spanish fusion programme are: the development of the “stellarator” concept, through the exploitation of the TJ-II device, the participation in some of the largest world fusion experiments (JET, LHD, W7X, ITER) and the development of knowledge and technologies for DEMO and future Power Plants. For this purpose, CIEMAT drives some specific research programmes likeTechnofusion project and plays an important role in the IFMIF EVEDA project.

The main research areas in the Spanish Fusion Technology Programme are:
- Materials Technology, including experiments and modelling for functional and structural materials placing special emphasis on the radiation effects
- Development of components and systems for the IFMIF accelerator
- Design of the IFMIF irradiation test cell.
- Blanket technology including predictive tools development
- Remote handling
- RAMI, Safety and Radioprotection
